Why Kizz Daniel Should Win The Artist Of The Year 2021 Award Over Wizkid
In July, someone is going to take home the “Artist of the Year” award home from The Headies show, and there’s a good chance it’ll be Wizkid.
Since his magical return in 2020, WizKid has managed to impress, well, everyone and in return has received recognition for his works. That’s why he walked home with the best awards at The Headies last year.
There is no sensible reason why it shouldn’t be the same this year. Album of the Year? Well, “Made in Lagos (Deluxe Edition)” fits the criteria. Song of the Year? “Essence (Remix)” maybe? Artist of the Year? Well, of course, he’s a worthy candidate for that, no doubt. So, yeah, there’s no reason he shouldn’t take it all home.
Except, this time, there is one sensible reason why Wizkid might not or should not take home the prestigious Artist of the Year award home: Kizz Daniel.
This is not the first time Kizz Daniel and WizKid have had a head-to-head at the Headies. In 2016, they were both nominated for Song of the Year and Wizkid’s “Final (Baba Nla)” edged out Kizz Daniel’s “Mama.”
But this time, Kizz Daniel definitely deserves that Artist of the Year nod. Especially since Wizkid hasn’t exactly dropped new material since his October 2020 release of “Made in Lagos.”
Kizz Daniel, on the other hand, has been very busy. He started 2021 doing some songs (“Currently,” “Flex”) that were direct follow-ups to his 2020 “King of Love” rollout. After searching for a big hit and not getting any, he didn’t stop. He continued to make stuff until he finally hit the jackpot with a project called “Barnabas.”
This EP was the single most commercially successful project of 2021, and one of the best that was released during the course of the year. It had quite a few hits too (“Pour Me Water,” “Barnabas”). The EP was No. 1 for a long time and even until now, it’s still doing numbers.
By the end of 2021, no one except maybe Wizkid, had a better year than Kizz Daniel. Not even Buju. So in an award that has October 2020 to December 2021 as the year in review, I think it’s only fair that Kizz Daniel takes home the award instead of Wizkid.
We’ll see how it goes later on. Anyway, what do you think?
