Is Fireboy Now Bigger Than Davido And Burna Boy With His Billboard Entry?
There are only three artists from Nigeria ever with a Hot 100 entry as a lead artist.
Number one is Wizkid, who did it last summer with “Essence.” Second is CKay who debuted not long after Wiz, with “Love Nwantiti.”
And the third person is none other than the one and only Fireboy DML, who debuted earlier this week on last week’s chart. Forget about Apple Top 10 Albums in Nigeria, Hot 100 is the real deal.
But what this means also is that, what so many artists have failed at, Fireboy has succeeded at executing. Agreed, it’s with a little help from Ed Sheeran, but that help would never have come if “Peru” wasn’t already a huge smash. So, in a way, this is Fireboy’s doing.
After all, Davido had Lil Baby, Nicki Minaj, Nas, Chris Brown, Young Thug, and still couldn’t gain that entry. His last release, “Champion Sound” has also not brought about impressive numbers, especially numbers outside of Africa that’ll make something like a Hot 100 entry possible.
And, Burna Boy, with all his parade at the Grammys last year, you would have thought he would have done something like the debut on an important chart like that by now. Getting help from Wiz on his “B. D’or” track didn’t seem to have helped much either.
What Davido and Burna Boy have failed at, Fireboy has done. And he didn’t even have to do much. Also, Fireboy has two albums and his third album is coming soon, so I don’t know, maybe we gotta start reevaluating the metrics for determining if artists like Davido are really bigger than Fireboy, you know. Maybe, just maybe.
Anyway, let’s hear what you think?
