The WizKid versus 2Baba debate is not going anywhere.
Does Wizkid Have A Song Better Than 2Face’s “African Queen”?
As a matter of fact, for many more years to come, fans of Afrobeats and African music will continue to compare artists, old and new, to Wizkid.
With this current “Made in Lagos” wave, Wizkid hasn’t only cemented his legacy in the industry, he has also given pundits what to talk about for years. There’s no way we can stop talking about the Starboy now. That’s just impossible.
To some, Wizkid is the best thing since sliced bread. Better than King Sunny Ade, better than Fela Kuti, blah blah. It doesn’t matter if that’s true or not, because, in the end, the metrics for deciding will never be enough.
More reasonably though, some have said Wizkid is the most important figure in contemporary afro-pop. That is, from the early 2000s up until now, no artist can hold a candle to the “Essence” singer.
Okay, maybe, but what about the guy that gave the industry two classic albums and literally birthed the new wave. Yeah, the man called 2Face Idibia. If it were up to many people, 2Baba would just be recognized as the greatest of this Era.
The WizKid argument is strong, though. I mean, he’s definitely got his argument in terms of success, accomplishments, and impact. And, his talent is elite. Can’t be mad at anyone who says he’s the greatest.
But, if we start to do the comparison, where will it end? Seems like the only place Wizkid will have to drop the hat is when “African Queen” is mentioned. Wizkid has made a lot of iconic songs, but is there any that is on the level of 2Face‘s biggest hit?
Let’s hear from you.
