Jesus Christ came to the earth to liberate the sinners. Take the beloved to his father in heaven, circa five hundred years after his earthly mission, there is another man on a mission, it’s dissimilar to Jesus Christ but the gospel is well-timed.
In 2015, I got to know Blaqbonez while on a long vacation in Lagos, I listened to his Cassette Tapes And TVS mixtape, I became a fan, I even became his friend on Facebook before he recently became inactive.
While in OAU, Blaqbonez was known for hardcore rap, diss track(Check the outro of Novcane), even Adekunle Gold was not so lucky with Blaq. After a poor show at OAU, he got dissed the days that followed.
In 2018, he was part of the MI Abaga’s lead hip-hop rejuvenation schemed tagged LAMB August, his Bad Boy Blaq extended play was released during the process, it birthed the lovely Mamiwota tune. Oxlade’s hook on this ditty became his epiphany.
The second half of the following year was deployed into projecting Blaqbonez as the best rapper in Africa. It was a marketing scheme, in terms of cadence, delivery, rhyme, Blaqbonez was not even part of the top 10 rappers in Lagos state. The whole BRIA scheme was short-lived as he segued into experimenting with Dancehall on Mr. Boomastic EP.
Beyond being a rapper, Blaqbonez is an entertainer who does a lot of rigmarole to sell his product, during the lockdown, even naysayers streamed Haba. He created visual content to promote his song. Unlike artists who goes to sleep after signing up with record label, Blaqbonez has been multiplying his strategy, going crazy by the day, deploying more strategies to increase his streaming figures.
Sex Over Love is Blaqbonez’s ninth project, his first studio album. It’s a concept album with the tracks tilting between sex and love, with a 40 minutes playback, Blaqbonez spit his shi*, becoming an emergency prophet, preaching the gospel of sex over love.
Musicians are wary of groupies who mill around them during stardom, when you speak to a lot of them, they tell you the groupies came for the dough and they are rarely wrong about this notion, Blaqbonez repeated this on “Novacane”, trapping on his enemies, basking in the moment. The money is coming and he is not going back to the bottom. Novacane is a drug that is used to numb a part of the body.
On the Blaisebeatz produced ” Don’t Touch”, Blaqbonez switched upon the narrative. I thought he said Sex Over Love, why was he overprotective over a girl with a big butty? Not done, he vowed to fall men down for her, I don’t get, is our bother suffering from lack of focus?
Nasty C, Tiwa Savage, Buju, Amaarae, Joeboy, Bad Boy Timz, A-Q, Psycho YP, Superboy Cheque, Laycon, and 1Da Banton were the artists featured on this album, they brought the necessary vibe to the hip-hop, R&B, trap soul tracks.
Who dedicate a whole track to female anatomy? No one but Blaqbonez.
Blaqbonez is not good-looking, he knows this, not even sweet talk from the girls would change that. Save for Amaarae and Buju verse, Bling was better off this album.
Do people fall in love or sex? This question has not been properly explored, Blaqbonez came through with an Introduction to the topic of “Never Been In Love”. He became the honest and compassionate guy, telling his truth even though it hurtful.
Blaqbonez sounds like a typical soft guy with a hard guy posture, the dude who troll lovers and secretly wished they were the one in love, while he suppressed his emotion and ball like Sam Okwaraji, (a former Super Eagles player who died in service) this track might be an open epistle to his former girlfriends.
Caribbean influences were splashed all over this album, you find it on track like Fendi, BBC, Haba and one striking force that holds all the track is that erotic central points. They were all enamored in one sex talk or the other.
The minimal percussion on Faaji aided the delivery of 1DA Banton and Badboy Timz on this track, a feel-good track. Slowly, you get drowned by 1Da Banton’s tipsy vibe verse, then Badboy timz awake with you with his up-tempo flows.
Zombie was star-studded, they delivered but the track could have been elongated, I felt the artiste wanted to say more but they had to cut it short.
Blaqbonez and Cheque (Formerly Kyle B) had a relationship which is close to 10 years, on Best Friend, they relived the experience, trapping on looking out for one another.
Sex Over Love ended with a trip to the previously released sex-themed Haba but before that, he went on a cynical route. It was a brutal confession of a broho*.
Blaqbonez has a new mission. Educate the simps around, I hope he doesn’t quit this mission for another like he did with BRIA, a lot of the lines were off painful experiences with the female gender and it makes you wonder how many guys might be in the same situation as Blaq.
No doubt, a lot of the tracks had western influences but Blaqbonez was able to infuse his African root and this birthed a sonic meal that the fans have been savoring since the release of the album a week ago, sometimes, it get boring with his over-emphasis on topics.
