Between Seun Kuti And Femi Kuti – Who Is Truly Making Fela Proud & Keeping His Legacy Alive?
Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti, also known as Abami Eda, was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist.
He is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat, an African music genre that combines traditional Yoruba percussion and vocal styles with American funk and jazz.
Sadly, on 3 August 1997, Kuti’s brother Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, announced that Fela had died on the previous day from complications related to AIDS.
After his untimely death, his youngest son Seun took the role of leading Kuti’s former band Egypt 80. As of 2020, the band is still active, releasing music under the moniker Seun Kuti & Egypt 80.
On the other hand, Fela’s older son Femi began his musical career playing in his father’s band, Egypt 80 as well. In 1986, Femi started his own band, Positive Force, establishing himself as an artist independent of his father’s legacy.
If you ask me, I will say the two are trying their best differently. But I think Seun is more serious and focus on maintaining his father’slegacy than the elder brother Femi.
What do you think? If you are asked between the two brothers who is truly projecting Fela’s image and legacy, who would you pick?
